Unlike traditional western weight training such as powerlifting or Olympic lifting (yes, these are great training modalities too), where the force exerted by the weight on out body is always in one direction and constant muscular tension is required by the body to counteract this force, mace swinging provides an ever dynamic force on the body, the magnitude and direction of the force is constantly changing. This gives macebell swinging a whole host of benefits that traditional western strength training connot compete with:

The mace will teach you to move with dexterity, it creates the ability to redirect force rather than simply absorbing and fighting against it. A large part of progressing in the weight you are swinging, especially as a begginer, is learning the ability to move your body with the momentum of the mace and not against it. Think about this concept in the case of receiving a punch, being able to redirect the force of an incoming punch in a way that is beneficial to your own next move is going to be far more advantageous that simply absorbing the incoming force. 

Steel mace swinging will teach you deep focus, it requires both tension and relaxation from the body. Consider the traditional 360 swing, peak tension is required during the centre portion of the back swing, and then, as the mace rises under its own momentum, relaxation is required to catch the mace back in front centre position before allowing it to be cast out on the opposite side to repeat the cycle. The process of timing your periods of relaxation and forceful inputs creates a meditative focus that a simple powerlifting move cannot achieve, yes, focus is required to generate tension and force, but the cyclical nature of mace swinging takes that focus to the next level!
