How to choose the right steel mace length for you!

It doesnt take much imagination to understand that maces of different lengths swing very differently! As a begginer selecting the right length for you may seem daunting, but this article is here to help!

When someone asks me what steel mace length is going to best for them, I hit them straight back with a question; "What are you goals with your mace training?"

If someone already has experience with the steel mace, they may say something like, "I want to progress to heavier traditional swings (the 360 and 10-2)" or "I love to be creative with my mace through flow" or "I like doing functional complexes with the mace".

Those kind of answers make my job easier but often as a beginner you may not know exactly how you want use the mace yet, maybe you just want to give it a try and work out what is fun and rewarding for you. And in that case I always reccomend you start with the mid-length, 90cm for 1 inch or 100cm for 2 inch weight plates.

The mid-length mace is the most versatile, it keeps your options open and does everything well! It is the perfect length to both learn and master the traditional swings (360 and 10-2), the length I always reccomend to flow entheusiasts, it is the perfect length for functional strength moves such as ballistic curls, uppercuts, lunges and barbarian squats, it works for front swings and single arm work too!

The club length and XL length maces also have their place:

The XL length mace really comes into its own for the traditional swings, it produces a lovely slower tempo Gada style swing with a long fluid pull, it still works for a lot of functional moves but can feel more cumbersome for true flow and front swings are more challenging (especially for somone of my modest 5'9" stature!).

The club length is fantastic for high tempo, brutally explosive, heavy 2 handed swings, you can load it up a lot heavier than a longer mace and it really trains elasticity and explosiveness. It is also great for movements which include front swings such as mills, due to the shorter length, arms can remain relaxed during the front swing and the core can be fully integrated, but my favourite work with the club length is always single arm swing flow, inside and outside circles and direction changes. The club length is just perfect for this!
